Mr. Raymond L. Vick, Jr.'s Obituary
Raymond Louis Vick Jr. was born on October 23, 1931 at Hotel Dieu Hospital in Beaumont, Texas to Raymond Louis Vick Sr. and Ocie Maye Mullen Vick. Raymond graduated from Southpark High School, Beaumont, Texas in 1948 and graduated with a B.S. from Abilene Christian College in 1952. Raymond obtained a Master’s Degree from the University of Houston in 1963, and earned his Doctorate Degree and admission to Phi Kappa Phi in 1971. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Gray Vick, who he married in 1955, and his son, Ray Lynn Vick and daughter-in-law, Barbara Vick of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and daughter, Jenna Kay Vick Unell, and son-in-law, Gary Unell, of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by four grandchildren, April Vick Ebey (Tim), Shawn Vick, Madison Unell and Grantland Unell, and two great-grandchildren, Ayden Ebey and Addison Ebey. Other survivors include his two sisters, Joyce Nelson and Dorothy Rao, both of Beaumont, Texas and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Raymond was a school teacher, principal and superintendent of schools in various districts throughout his career including the Anchorage School District. He also served as a college professor in the field of eduction at Lamar University in Beaumont, the University of Alaska, Houston Baptist University and Oklahoma Christian University.
His life was given to education and research. He was a graduate Teaching Fellow, and researcher for Gulf Schools Research Association and wrote the first lesson plans for the teaching of space science concepts, in cooperation with NASA, which were used by the Spring Branch School System in Houston. He was also a longtime researcher and scholar of the Bible and a dedicated Bible school teacher in the Church of Christ.
His last position was as Superintendent of the Harlindale School District in San Antonio where he retired in 1995. He loved Alaska and after moving back to Texas continued to make many trips to The Last Frontier to fish for halibut. He was honored by Sohio-BP with a VIP trip to the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay on the North Slope. He loved his grandchildren and took joy and great pride in all of their accomplishments.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 31, 2015 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, with the funeral service at 11:00 am in the Chapel at San Jacinto Funeral Home. Interment will immediately follow in San Jacinto Memorial Park.
