Millie Louise “Granny” Gassett passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 23, 2021 at the age of 106 in Katy, Texas. Granny was born in Fostoria, Texas on January 8, 1915. She was the fourth of eight children born to Ida C. and William C. McShan. Granny spent her whole life living in Southeast Texas and loved to tell stories about playing baseball and swimming in the creek as a child with her brothers and sisters; Hester Bryan, Otis “Peewee” McShan, Oscar McShan, Dorothy Degraft, Bernice Williams, Frank “Son” McShan and Truman McShan. When Granny was 19 years old, she met Lawrence Fred “Pawpaw” Gassett at a church dinner and they soon fell in love. Granny married Pawpaw on March 6, 1935 in Porter, Texas and together they raised 6 children; Norman Jerry Gassett, Yvonnie Marie Nigh, Marion Glenn Gassett, Alden Lawrence Gassett, Patricia Louise Reese and William Jackson “Jack” Gassett. Granny was an active member of First Baptist Highlands Church, contributing in many ways including teaching Sunday school. She loved spending time with her family, especially her 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great-grandchildren, even helping raise them. She enjoyed watching classic TV shows and religious programming as well as reading, sewing and doing crossword puzzles in her spare time. And when her busy life allowed, she loved to travel around the country. Granny lived through the Great Depression, two World Wars and two global pandemics and never lost her warm smile and never got enough neck sugar. Granny was predeceased by her parents Ida and William McShan of Highlands, Texas, her siblings, three of her children; Alden of Highlands, Texas, Patty of Seabrook, Texas and Jack of Dayton, Texas as well as two grandchildren and a great-grandchild. She is survived by son Norman Gassett and his wife Eugenia of Katy, Texas, daughter Yvonnie Nigh of Lake Jackson, Texas, son Glenn Gassett and his wife Barbara of Conroe, Texas and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She had a love for peanut butter cookies, a good pot of Chicken and Dumplings, and was the maker of Egg Gravy but will always be remembered as Granny to everyone! All are welcome for visitation to take place at San Jacinto Funeral Home, 14659 East Freeway, Houston, Texas 77015 on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 from 3-7PM. Funeral service will be held at 10AM Wednesday, June 2, 2021 with Don Babin officiating at the funeral home. Burial to follow in the San Jacinto Memorial Cemetery.
