Thurman Parnell Moore

Thurman Parnell Moore passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 17, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. They find comfort knowing he is now at rest and praising his greatest love, his Maker, Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Thurman was a deacon and faithful leader for over 50 years at his beloved church, First Baptist Church of North Channel. Over the years he spent countless hours dedicating his time to teaching Sunday school, helping with vacation bible school, greeting and visiting new members, ushering, volunteering at revivals, participating in visitations, and doing various maintenance repairs on the church grounds.
In his younger years, he enjoyed spending time camping, fishing and hunting with his son, wife and grandchildren and traveling to some of his favorite places like Wyoming, Colorado, Canada and Alaska and watching his favorite teams, The Texans and The Astros. He worked as a millwright at the grain elevator and ship conveyors for The Port of Houston for about 37 years before he retired in the early 80’s to enjoy more time with family.
Thurman was a Coast Guard veteran from WWII where he was a Motor Machinist Mate, First Class, for troop transports and supply ships to the Pacific islands. He trained at CGTS Alameda base in California. He served as mechanic on the USS Serpens, which later sunk from an explosion while sailors were loading up depth charges and he also served on the USS Randall. In such, Thurman will have Military Funeral Honors at the graveside services.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Magdeline Haire-Moore, his son Virgil Wayne Moore, his father Cowan “Pop” Calvin Moore, his mother Mildred Johnston-Moore, and many other family members. He is survived by his son Cowan “Calvin” Moore, his wife, Judith Turner-Moore, grandchildren: Samson Moore, his wife, Mary Moore, David Moore, his wife, Bonnie Moore, Michael Moore, Toni Parrish, LeeAnne Carruthers and Dominic Moore, his wife, Kelsey Moore, and great grandchildren: Heather Moore-Arvizu, Tyler Moore, Austin Moore, Makayla Moore, Auria Moore and great-great grandchildren: Abbie and Isabella Arvizu.
