Mr. Thomas G. Carter's Obituary
Thomas Greet Carter was born to Ephraim Taylor Carter and Olive Colegrove Carter on February 23, 1927 in Gadsden, Alabama. When he passed away on February 15, 2018 he was the last surviving sibling of brothers and sisters Martha Hamilton, George Carter, Charles Carter, and Ruth Lay.
He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 71 years, Vera Mae Carter of Houston, Texas along with sons Glenn and his wife Kay Carter of Galena Park; Gary and his wife Theresa Carter of Houston and Ricky Carter of Danbury, Texas.
When he turned 17, he and his two older brothers inlisted into the U.S. Navy to join America's fight with the allies in World War II during the years 1944-46. He served on the USS LCI(L)-503 of the 7th Flotilla of the 7th Fleet in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
Upon exiting the Navy at the end of the war, he and Vera of Gadsden eloped and were married in Dade County, Georgia on July 30, 1946. A few years later he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized on August 9, 1953 at Cherry Creek Baptist Church in Gadsden. Shortly after, Tom accepted a job at Armco Steel (then Sheffield Steel) in Houston, Texas prompting He and Vera to move with young sons Glenn and Gary to the Woodland Acres area.
During the early 1960’s he was heavily involved with the Greens Bayou Little League as a manager or volunteer and enjoyed the fruits of his labor as his sons were selected to the all-star teams to represent the league in post season play.
When the grandkids came along he relished his new handle of Papa Tom. His grandchildren are Timothy with wife Jamie Carter of Mont Bellvieu,TX; Karrah with husband Troy Robinson of Hays, Kansas; Mindi with husband Brett Boone of Kingwood, TX; and Stacey Carter and fiance Danial Shams of Chicago, Illinois along with his beloved granddogs Luke, Lily and Lacey and grandcat Linus.
Great grandchildren are Kylie, Ashley and Addilyn Carter; Jacie and Gregory Robinson; and Dylan and Reagan Boone.
He invested a great part of his life attending and supporting his sons' and grandchildren’s sports and school and church activities (while his health allowed him) no matter what city or state they were held.
In 1998, Tom and Vera began attending Calvary Baptist Church and immediately felt at home. Attending Calvary were always a blessed event. Tom and Vera reached an incredible milestone on July 30, 2016 as they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with church members, friends and relatives at Calvary.
A part of Tom Carter will live on; he was a donor for the Life Gift program for burn and cancer victims, and his memories will always live on in our minds and in our hearts.
A visitation will be held at Calvary Baptist Church on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 from 10:00am to 11:00am, with a funeral service to begin at 11:00, with a graveside service to take place at San Jacinto Memorial Park. Pastor Jene Conwell will be presiding over services. Serving as pallbearers are Rudy Tijerina, Jimmy Dufrene, Mike Fendley, Curtis Cavazos, Ricky Carter and Gary Carter.
