Sheldon Gene Koonce's Obituary
Sheldon Gene Koonce, 78, of Crosby, Texas, passed away on March 21, 2026, in Crosby. He was born on April 5, 1947, to Oneita and William Koonce in Leesville, Louisiana. Gene married the love of his life, Pauline Johnson, on April 12, 1969, in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Northshore High School in 1966.
Gene proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He continued his service in the United States Air Force Reserves from 1970 to 1972 as a Staff Sergeant. Following his military career, he dedicated 23 years to the Houston Police Department, serving his community with honor and integrity.
Gene enjoyed a life filled with simple joys and meaningful moments. He loved hunting, fishing, watching sports, and spending time with his family. Some of his happiest moments were spent cheering on his grandchildren at their ballgames. He had a wonderful sense of humor and took great pleasure in making his family laugh with his jokes.
He is survived by his daughter, Tracy Thompson, and her husband, Craig; his son, Sheldon Gene Koonce Jr., and his wife, Shannon. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren—Cody, Clay, Cameron, Breanna, Crista, Chance, Mason, and Peighton—and five great‑grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life.
Gene is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pauline Koonce; his mother, Oneita Hale; his father, William Koonce; and his brother, William “Butch” Koonce Jr.
His family meant the world to him, and his unforgettable laugh will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
