Ruth Elizabeth Cox Miller's Obituary
Ruth E. Miller, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2023, at Houston Hospice. She was 79 years old. Ruth was born on December 26, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas, to her parents, Arthur and Gloria Jo Cox. On December 13, 1963, she married the love of her life in Houston, Texas, and together they built a life filled with love and cherished memories that spanned over 60 years.
Ruth graduated from Harlendale High School in 1961 and pursued her passion in the field of dentistry, graduating from Texas Health Science Center in 1963. For 38 dedicated years, she worked as a dental hygienist before retiring. Later, she and her husband embarked on a new journey, successfully running their own business for 26 years.
Ruth was not only a skilled professional but also a compassionate listener and patient teacher. She was always ready to lend a helping hand and offer guidance to anyone in need. When she wasn't extending her kindness to others or adopting animals in need, she could often be found with a fishing rod in hand. Ruth had an uncanny ability to out-fish anyone and took great pleasure in this cherished hobby. Sewing was another passion of hers, and there was always a sewing project in progress, reflecting her creativity and attention to detail.
Most of all, Ruth found immense joy in being an integral part of her children and grandchildren's lives. Her dedication to her family was unwavering and absolute.
Ruth leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness. She is survived by her loving husband, Melvin R. Miller of Channelview, TX; her daughter, Leah K. Smith, and son-in-law Neil A. Smith of Houston, TX; her son, Joseph A. Miller of Channelview, TX; her brothers, Stephan D. Cox and wife Edna Cox, John A. Cheesman and wife Coni Cheesman, and Philip N. Cheesman; her sister-in-law, Frankie Jo Cox; and her cherished grandchildren, Kristin Renee Miller and Victoria Jane Smith. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and many great friends to cherish on her loving memories.
Ruth is preceded in death by her mother, Gloria Jo Smith Cox; her father, Arthur L. Cox; her grandmother, Adelaide Yantis; her sister, Drucella L. Nixon; her brother, James H. Cox; and her beloved grandson, Tyler McIlvaine Miller.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center or your favorite animal shelter in Ruth's honor. Ruth's love for her family, her caring nature, and her passion for life will forever be remembered and cherished by those fortunate enough to have known her. May her gentle soul rest in eternal peace.
