Mrs. Ruby Nell (Latour) Asher's Obituary
Ruby Nell (Latour) Asher, was born on November 12, 1930 in Ville Platt, Louisiana and passed away on Sunday, November 18, 2012 at the age of 82. She is proceeded in death by her parents Paul Remi Fontenot and Della Viola Grimball Fontenot, her sisters Edna Mae Robert and Florine Joy Bourgeois, husband John Henry Latour (whom she married in 1948 and lost to death in 1971), husband Ray Blevins Asher (whom she married in 1974 and lost in 2010), and grandson Matthew Henry. Ruby married John Latour married shortly after she graduated from high school and soon after that they moved to Houston. Ruby's primary goal was to be a wife and mother and their first child -- Jane -- was born about a year later. John arrived two years after that, followed by Steve, Mark and Kim. Until John's untimely death in 1971, Ruby had never worked outside the home. However, she did work a great deal inside the home cooking and cleaning for 5 children in a small 3 bedroom house with only 1 bathroom. Family was very important to her, and she loved having visitors. Drop-ins were always welcome, especially around meal times, because everyone knew there would be plenty of food and Ruby was considered a wonderful cook. Most vacations were also centered around the family. Ruby, John and the kids traveled to Louisiana frequently where they spent long weekends visiting "the Louisiana cousins". After "Grandma Latour" died, John and Ruby purchased her house and the family would travel to Louisiana about once a month. Cleaning started as soon as they arrived, but the remainder of the weekend was spent visiting with family, playing and eating. Ray Asher had known John Latour because they worked together at Armco Steel, but the families were not close friends. Ray waited a respectable amount of time after John's death and then he asked Ruby on a date. They were married a few years later. Ray and Ruby were active in the community centers in North Shore and Channelview, and following Ray's retirement from Armco they both worked part-time at the center in Channelview where they made many new friends. They loved spending time with other retirees in a variety of social activities and trips. They especially loved bowling, dominos, and dancing. Sometimes they would entertain the grandchildren by dancing around the living room, and they won 1st place in a Twist dance contest on a Caribbean cruise. Ruby especially liked the honor of winning because they became celebrities for the rest of the cruise and were invited to dine at the Captain's Table. In addition to their friends at the community centers, Ray and Ruby were active in Faith Presbyterian Church in Baytown and were Sunday morning regulars for many years. Ruby was also active in her women's circle and loved both the faith and fellowship provided by her church family. Following Ray's death in 2010, Ruby's health started declining and she faced a variety of issues that limited her mobility. She fell in her home in June of this year and doctors found a large tumor on her neck that was causing her pain. She was later diagnosed with B Cell Lymphoma, and she was surrounded by friends and family almost constantly during the last months of her life. Ruby is survived by her children Mary Jane Lindsey and husband James William Lindsey, John Robert Latour, Paul Steven Latour, Mark Randal Latour and wife Cynthia Howard Latour, and Kim Wesley Latour and wife Anne Malloy Latour; step-children Beverly Tonks Asher, Scott Asher, and Philip Asher and Tookie Postle; sister Cecilia Birch and husband Shelton; brother-in-law W.A.
