The youngest of seven children, Mike was born on February 23, 1952, to Hugh and Carmen Ludlow Pettit in Jacinto City, TX. He graduated from Galena Park High School in 1970. He was a star athlete in football and basketball, but excelled at baseball, his first love. He received a full scholarship to pitch for Rice University. While at Rice, Mike was named to the All-Southwest Conference team for the 1972 season. The highlight of his baseball career came when he pitched a shutout against the University of Texas at home. When Mike graduated in 1974, he held the university record for the lowest ERA in a single season at .98, which still stands today.
Mike married Brenda Hammock on May 17, 1974 after dating for 4 years. His daughter Brandy was born in 1978 and they raised her in the home they share today. He was a faithful husband and father, always present at ball games, recitals, and competitions. Their family grew with a son-in-law, Josh Worley, and soon after, two grandchildren, Jace and Morgan, who were the apples of Papaw’s eye.
He went to work for Brown & Root and through the years was employed by Fluor, Kellogg Brown & Root, Halliburton, Crown Industries and Turner Industries. Mike took pride in his work and was a faithful employee, coworker and friend throughout his career.
Mike accepted Jesus as his Savior at an early age. Throughout his life he was a Godly man who loved Jesus with all his heart and served Him faithfully. His faith in Christ was ever-present in his life, and he passes on a Godly legacy to his family who considers this to be his greatest accomplishment.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Hugh Pettit; brother-in-law Jeff Hammock; and fathers-in-law, Forrest Hammock and Morris Kingston.
