Mrs. Mary H. Velasquez's Obituary
A Texas native and lifelong resident, Mary Hernandez Velasquez was granted her angel wings on April 5th, 2011 at the age of 83. Mary was born February 18, 1928 in San Marcos, Texas. Her beauty won her the title of "Queen of Dieciseis de Septembre" in San Marcos, Texas at the age of 20. She married Charlie Velasquez on December 11th, 1948 in San Marcos, Texas, and they started a family. She was a dedicated wife, a loving mother, a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. An exceptional cook, the delights that came out of her kitchen brought family together which brought her great pleasure. The residents of her neighborhood elected her as "The World's Greatest Tortilla Maker" because of her delicious tortillas. She enjoyed the challenge of word puzzles and game shows, her favorites being Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Spending time with her family and one or all of her 4 grandchildren and great grandson, brought great joy to her life. She was known as "Auntie Mary" to her multitude of loving nieces and nephews and extended family. Mary and Charlie celebrated 62 years of marriage in December 2010. She is preceded by death by her mother Monica Morales; step-father Joe Morales; sister Aurora Hernandez; brother Marcelo Hernandez; sister Amelia Machado, and beloved dog, Flo. She is survived by her husband Charlie Cervantes Velasquez; her sister Ofelia Garza; her children: son Charles Richard Velasquez; daughter Cynthia Sue Velasquez-Uresti; son Kenneth Lee Velasquez and wife Anna Marie; son Gerald Troy Velasquez; grandchildren: Vincent Van Velasquez and fiance Maria, Amy Annette Erickson and husband Keith, Audra Halee Uresti and Genesis Alexa Velasquez; and her great-grandson Weston Walker Erickson. The family will receive firends Thursday, April 7, 2011 from 5pm to 8pm at the San Jacinto Memorial Funeral Home, with the Rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 6:00pm. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, April 8th, 2011. Interment will follow in the San Jacinto Memorial Park . Pallbearers are: Donald Velazquez, Joe Velazquez and Kelly Hawkins of Houston, Gilbert Garza of Cibolo, Texas, Hank Ybarra of Gillham, Arkansas, and Michael Velasquez of Lockhart, Texas. Following the services the family will be hosting a reception at the Heritage Hall Senior Citizens Center, 1025 Oates Rd. in Jacinto City.
