Grandma Mary is our family's matriarch. She has influenced my life in profound ways, from childhood, and throughout my adult life. She taught me to be a lady, to be loving and forgiving, but to have the strength, wisdom, and discernment to fight back when it is warranted. Although the sense of loss will never go away and she will always be missed, her spirit continues to influence me and generations to come. I miss her greatly, but I know that she would want us to continue the good fight.
As the first immigrant to this country, her sacrifices paved the way for generations. I honored that sacrifice by being the 1st Gen student to complete higher education in our family. She was able to see me walk that stage, and I know she was proud. Already, her legacy continues with my family and the people we interact with in our lives.
There’s so much I could write about this dynamic woman, but I’ll end with some funny memories. Grandma was a great storyteller, even a simple conversation around weather was entertaining with her sound effects of thunder “auhhhnn” (hands in the air and wide-eyes) and lightning “chukoo” or when she would forget the lyrics to a song but keep singing anyway, “young girl get out of mind…nah, nah, nah…” then humming.
Anybody that knew her was lucky to share some time in her light. And for those of us that were close, we were blessed.
