John "Johnny" Wendell Powell's Obituary
John “Johnny” Wendell Powell, age 60, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at his childhood Channelview home surrounded by loved ones. He was born March 29, 1962, in Channelview, Texas to Thomas and Vera Powell. After high school, Johnny received his Associate of Arts Degree from San Jacinto College North. Johnny’s artistic abilities constantly left his family in awe, which is why his paintings can still be found in each of their homes to this day. Although Johnny always had the best intentions and strived to please his family, as the accident-prone, middle brother of 5 children, Johnny always found his way into trouble, or as he would like to call it “a good time.” Whether it was playing in the ditch after Mother told him no, engaging in roman candle battles with his brothers, or accidentally firing off any projectile-shooting weapon that was ever placed in his hands, Johnny always found himself in the middle of a “good time.”
Johnny had a deeply caring, loving, and thoughtful soul. He zealously cared for his parents, taking them to appointments and family gatherings for years. He even saved his mother’s life on several occasions with his fast-acting reflexes to get her help when he could sense something was off. If any of his siblings ever needed an extra hand, opinion, or company, Johnny was the first one there ready to talk their ears off and put a smile on their faces...and maybe even a little roll in their eyes.
Johnny had a child-like spirit and loved the holidays and going on vacations. Many times, he was so excited about an approaching holiday or vacation that he wouldn’t sleep for days before. Hence why his snores were heard across the whole county during the entire drive and the first day of the trip.
Johnny was present in the lives of his entire family, and his presence never went unnoticed…no matter how hard you tried. Though Johnny did not have children of his own, he was very involved in the lives of his niece and nephews. He was a regular supporter at their baseball games, track meets, and recitals. He also always got the senior discount…way before he was eligible for it. Johnny was a light-hearted spirit who loved a good laugh, even when he was the butt of a joke.
Johnny was truly one-of-a-kind. A man who eagerly served and loved the Lord. A man of many talents, innovations, thoughts, ideas, hobbies, and interests. A duct tape connoisseur and creator of endless compartments, pockets, and gadgets. Johnny was one of those people who couldn’t meet a soul without making some sort of lasting impact, and because of this, he is deeply missed by everyone who was blessed to know him.
Although we now have a Johnny-sized hole in our hearts, his memory and legacy will live on forever. We love you, Johnny. You meant so much to so many.
Johnny is survived by his father and mother, Thomas and Vera Powell; brother, Thomas Powell Jr., and daughters, Monica and Jessica; brother, Michael Powell and wife Debra; brother, Daniel Powell and fiancé Darlene; sister, Kimberly Robison and husband Michael; nephew, Michael Powell Jr.; niece, Vera Powell; nephew, Keith Powell and his son Daniel and daughter Destiny; nephew, Cody Powell and his wife Skyla and son Dustin; nephew, Timothy Robison and wife Sarah; niece, Brittni Sharp and husband Nathan; along with countless of other loved ones.
