James David Henderson
1936–2026
James David Henderson, 89, of La Porte, Texas, passed away on January 15, 2026, in La Porte, surrounded by the family he cherished so deeply. Born on November 22, 1936, in Teague, Texas, he was the son of David Lowry Henderson and Carrie Morene Henderson.
A devoted husband, James married the love of his life, Barbara Purswell, on April 18, 1968, in Houston, Texas. Together they built a life rooted in faith, hard work, and unwavering love for their growing family.
James was a proud grocer, owning and operating his own store and serving his community for 50 years. His work ethic, kindness, and steady presence made him a trusted and beloved figure to many. He was a longtime member of Dell Dale Avenue Baptist Church and an active member of C.A. Forther Masonic Lodge #1304, where he formed lifelong friendships.
Outside of work, James found joy in farming and raising cattle, but nothing brought him more happiness than time spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great‑grandchildren. His family was the heart of his world.
James honorably served in the Army National Guard from 1950 to 1954, a commitment he carried with quiet pride throughout his life.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara D. Henderson; daughters Patricia Thompson and husband Clay, Cindy Campbell and husband Don, Karen Stansel and husband Rick, and Judy Shuttlesworth and husband Gerry; son Darin Henderson; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great‑grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lowry and Morene Henderson; sisters Nelda, Dorothy, and Yvonne; and brother Jay.
James leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, and dedication. His presence will be deeply missed, and his memory will be treasured by all who knew him.
