Hersell Arthur Poston's Obituary
Hersell "Herschel" A. Poston
Herschel was born on October 1, 1921 in Lexington, Texas to Jewel Hollis Poston and Chester Arthur Poston. He died on August 4, 2011 with his family at his side. At the age of 5, Herschel's family moved with the Texas Company to Galena Park, where Herschel lived his entire life. Herschel is survived by his wife of 66 years, Edith Robison Poston, and their two daughters and sons-in-law, Leah and Bill Braden, Jeanne and Dwayne Lum, grandchildren Clinton and Kathryn Lum, Sister Reba Faye Clay of Brenham, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews. At the age of 15, Herschel was the second child in his family to leave school to help his mother in supporting the family after the sudden death of his father. When Herschel was 22 yrs old, he enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marines and served his country in both the Pacific and Atlantic War Zones. While on leave on September 14, 1944, he married Edith Robison, from Pasadena, Texas. Upon returning from the service, he began a successful career in the refining industry along the Houston ship channel. He began by working for Saybolt as an inspector where he obtained skills that were the groundwork for his career until he retired from GATX (now Kinder Morgan) in 1986. Throughout his "working" life Herschel found a little time to play some golf. He became a scratch golfer, representing his company in many tournaments. By the time he retired, he had arranged to work for Texaco Country Club, taking advantage of the free green fees as the course Marshal and starter for many years. As successful as Herschel was both professionally and with golf, neither could compare to his success as a musician. Herschel was self taught and could play any stringed instrument by ear, excelling in the acoustic guitar. He recorded a single under the pen name of "Dub" Poston having written the music and the lyrics. His daughters used to complain that on Saturdays at 7:00am he would practice the violin so loudly that it prevented them from sleeping late!
Herschel is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Cecil Poston, Buel Poston, Ben Poston and Jim Poston. In lieu of flowers, you may send donations to the Second Baptist Church, Attn: Chester Poston, 1913 18th Street, Galena Park, TX 77547.
