I was very saddened to learn of Gordon's passing. I met Gordon through the AP U.S. History world, one in which he played a larger than life role. Gordon was a dynamic professional, always searching for a way to help students better understand the nuances of America's grand story. Gordon was also a mentor to dozens and dozens of history teachers throughout the nation. The creation of the internet broadened Gordon's reach and impact on the teaching of history. Gordon was one of a kind, a gentle soul who will be greatly missed by the APUSH teaching community.

I alawys enjoyed visiting with Butch, his story were always entertaining. Going to miss him and reget not visiting with him, these couple of years.
I had Mr. Utz for American History Class in the early 80's at Stratford.. He is one of the few teachers that I do remember from school. He was a hoot, he made our class fun and also he always had a great story to tell about his family heritage that was revelent to what we were studding at that time. I also saw him out side of class at that time I was filming the games for the basketball team.
Gordon and I did not know each other when we were chosen by D & S Marketing to be the co-authors of the AP Prep book with ponderous name that became known in the trade as the "Green Book." Although we never met in person, we formed a strong bond through E-mails and over the telephone as we collaborated in researching and writing the "Green Book." Gordon was a kind and gentle man committed to his students, his profession, and especially the discipline of history. After his accident we communicated a few times and he urged me to continue the work we started with the 5th edition to a 6th edition of the D & S book that would be based on the new curriculum. I have done so and it will be ready for publication this spring right after the May 2014 exam. I will certainly miss Gordon as all of us who knew him will. He has been a giant figure in the AP US community and I value the friendship that we established in our collaboration. It is a sad day indeed with Gordon no longer with us. Respectfully, Tom Barnes

I had Mr. Utz for American History when Stratford was still hanging out at Westchester waiting for the school to be built. He made the class so easy to do well in. I remember his essay tests each semester were taken with open notes. In other words, if you took good notes through the semester, you could do really well on the test. Sounds too easy, but it made you listen and take good notes and thus you learned! Kind of sneaky of him but it worked. I also remember some of the fun "projects" we did in that class. Then when we finally got over to Stratford Mr. Utz was the registrar and I got to work as a student helper in his office. What a great friend to all the people he met! Great memories of a wonderful person! God Bless you Mr. Utz!

Mr. Utz helped me learn to teach the AP US History course. He informed and inspired my teaching of history. I always looked forward to reading his posts on the AP Listserv. He is greatly missed.
