Mr. Edmond Morris Herring's Obituary
Edmond Morris Herring, “Morris the Old Tom Cat” was born on October 28, 1926 in Sulphur, Oklahoma. Morris was survived by his daughter, Angel Herring, and registered service dog, Gizmo Herring. His mother was Mamie and his father was E.B. “Jack” Herring. He had a brother named Kenneth. His parents were teachers in his early life.
Morris grew up in Texas, he was only in Oklahoma long enough to be born. Mamie was full-blooded Choctaw Indian and wanted him born on the same land as her. It was still Choctaw land when Mamie was born. Morris was very proud of his Choctaw heritage.
Morris grew up to be a butcher and ran the family grocery store. He also served our country in the Coast Guard for four years as a merchant marine. Later, he became a traveling salesman for different meat companies. He lived in different places, such as, Big Springs, Odessa, and Wichita Falls. This is where he met Dorothy Jean Drummond. They soon married and moved to Houston in 1968.
Later Angelina Michelle was born on November 6, 1972. This made Morris very happy. He told Dorothy, “You name her whatever you want, she’s my little Angel!”
After retiring from the meat business, he decided to become a substitute teacher. He loved working with children. Later Morris worked as a sample distributor and a jewelry salesperson at Sam’s Club. His favorite part of the day was making people smile.
In his younger days, he was very active with the Masonic Lodge. He was a 32nd degree Mason and received a great honor in 2006. Morris was given his 60 year pin.
In 2009, after Dorothy went to be with the Lord, Morris spent his time travelling with Angel. They were inseparable. They were best friends and had a blast going on vacations during the holidays. They also attended many teacher-related conferences during the year.
Three years ago Gizmo became part of their lives as his certified service dog. Gizmo immediately became part of the family and took part in all of their traveling escapades. Gizmo brought lots of joy and love into Morris’ life.
Morris was a very strong man and always had a level head. He became very ill last August, but continued to do all the things that made him happy, like travelling and spending time with Angel and Gizmo.
Morris fought a great fight up to the last moment when he went to Heaven on Tuesday, July 25, 2017.
