Mrs Edith Robison Poston's Obituary
Edith Robison Poston was born on September 7, 1923 in Dayton, Texas to Leona Sackett Robison and Mike Robison. She died on May 1, 2013 at the age of 89 with her family by her side. At five years of age, Edith's family moved from Dayton to Pasadena, where her father worked as an original employee of the Shell Refinery in Deer Park, Texas. Edith is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Leah and Bill Braden, Jeanne and Dwayne Lum, grandchildren Clinton and Kathryn Lum, sister-in-law Reba Faye Clay of Brenham, brother-in-law Joe Daleo of Pasadena, and numerous nieces and nephews. Edith graduated from Pasadena High School in 1940 having played the alto saxophone in the marching band. Soon after graduation, she attended business school learning to operate a comptometer machine (a predecessor to the current day adding machine). She worked for Folgers Coffee for only one month before taking a job in the payroll department on the evening shift at Brown Shipyard. She worked there through much of World War II. It was on September 14, 1944 that Edith married Herschel Poston, of Galena Park, Texas, while he was home on leave from the Merchant Marines.
In the mid-1940s, Edith left Brown Shipyard for a position in the payroll department of Sinclair Refinery, where she worked for over 15 years. Aside from an occasional vacation day, Edith carpooled to Sinclair every day with her brother-in-law Buel Poston and friends Mr. Wright and Mr. Thrash, noting that every fourth week she provided the car, but let Buel do the driving. Edith left Sinclair to become a stay-at-home mother when her daughter Leah Elletta was born. Two years later Edith and Herschel became the proud parents of their second daughter, Jeanmarie. When Leah entered elementary school, Edith became an active volunteer with the Galena Park Elementary School PTA, where she received Lifetime Membership recognition. When Edith was 53 years old she re-entered the work force. This time she was in the education field, as the secretary to the principal of Galena Park Elementary. For the next ten years, Edith walked to work, where she was greeted by 600 students every day! Her daughters later learned that it was Edith's income from her position with the school that allowed them to attend college without student loans. Edith was an avid reader and was teased by her family that she had read every book in the Harris County Library! (She frequently said that the library was the best use of her tax dollars.) She began her love of books at a very early age, and as a child, found herself a quiet spot on a big tree limb where she could escape to enjoy her books. In addition to being a life-long reader, Edith was very skilled at handwork, in particular counted-cross stitch. Her family and friends will forever cherish the pictures and tablecloths she made for them - many of which look like paintings instead of handwork. Edith is preceded in death by her husband, Herschel, her two sisters that she adored, Elletta Carroll and Jean Daleo, her brother-in-law Joe Carroll, and her husband's brothers and spouses, Buel and Marie Poston, Ben and Doris Poston, Jim and Joyce Poston, and brother-in-law Thomas Clay. Edith's family wishes to thank the caregivers of Comfort Keepers, AMed Community Hospice and most especially to the caring staff at The Hampton, Pearland where Edith lived since September 2011. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 12 Noon until 2:00 P.M. at Pasadena Funeral Chapel, 2203 Pasadena Blvd, Pasadena,TX 77502. The graveside service will follow at Sterling-White Cemetery, 11011 Crosby Lynchburg Rd. in Highlands,TX with Reggie Clemons of the First United Methodist Church of Pearland officiating.
