Ms. Edith "Peggy" Ophelia Cummings Sloan's Obituary
Edith Ophelia Cummings Sloan, known as ‘Peggy’ to all of her family and friends, age 83, of Galena Park, Texas, passed away peacefully the morning of August 2, 2016 with her dearest friend, Carl Moore at her side.
She was one of a kind and unafraid to speak her mind, poke at your weak spots, or give you a hard time to amuse herself. Peggy would also give you the shirt off her back (especially during her years at Hi-10), accurate advice, a shoulder to cry on or a slap upside the head if that’s what you needed; a slice of cornbread with some crowder peas and iced tea while you talked about your problems. She was an amazing woman with the strength and fortitude to hold her family up, and keep it together through her entire life. She brought us together with her unshakable love for every member of our family. We are so lucky to have had the last 8 years we were granted with Peggy after her first big hospital scare, blessed to have her around long enough to be a part of her great grandbabies’ lives. Her cornbread dressing and peach cobbler will forever be remembered as “best ever” and we can’t imagine Thanksgiving without her ordering us around with an amused twinkle in her eye.
She took care of everyone she knew, for as long as she knew them. She made the best of every situation – even as she was pretending to make the worst of it. She lived through some of the worst times a life has to offer, losing both a son and a husband, but soldiering on through both. Battling failing health, and a fixed income, but still able to take care of those around her. She was a thoughtful woman and a great friend. She knew how to make the most of everything, a dollar, a moment, a meal, a memory. She will NEVER be forgotten by those lucky enough to have known her.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her brother, Homer (Buck) Cummings Jr., his wife Fanny and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her son, Greg Sloan, his wife Pansy; daughter, Jamie Sloan McPherson, and husband Ron. Grandchildren: Chris McPherson, Kimberly McPherson, Jennifer Portlock and her husband Brian; Jennifer Rodel, Keith Norman, Marlene Ruiz and Katelyn Sloan. She leaves 7 great grandchildren: Brian McPherson, Dustin McPherson, Gabrielle McPherson, R.C. McPherson II, Isabella Portlock, Norah Portlock and Tyler Rodel. She also leaves behind her best friend, Carl Moore and dear friend Juanita Long. Also her dearly loved “adopted” granddaughter, Aja Perrin.
She is preceded in death by her beloved son, Stephen (Steve) Fell; her husband of 43 years, Raymond (Pete) Sloan; sisters Jeanette Cummings Tittle and Carolyn Cummings Warren; parents Henry Homer Cummings and Nora Lee Hargraves Cummings.
The family would like to thank Vitas Hospice, especially her personal caretakers, Liz and Jinyi for their excellent care and compassion since February and making her last days comfortable.
Memorial service will be held Sunday, August 7, 2016 at 3:30 P.M. at San Jacinto Memorial Funeral Home, 14659 East Freeway, Houston, TX. 77015
